The anti-inflammatory effects of cow parsley

A group of researchers evaluated the potential anti-inflammatory activity of leaves from the cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris (L.) Hoffm.) plant. This finding, which was published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, was determined through in vivo and in vitro methods.

  • Cow parsley root is commonly used as a traditional Korean medicine for relieving coughs.
  • Prior to this study, the bioactivity of cow parsley leaves has not been determined.
  • The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of cow parsley extracts was determined in RAW264.7 cells that were induced with lipopolysaccharides.
  • In vivo assessments was conducted using rats as animal models. Anti-inflammatory activity was based on the ability of the extracts to inhibit carrageenan-induced paw edema.

The results of the study showed that extracts from cow parsley leaves can inhibit nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kappa B) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) pathways, which are involved in inflammation, in vitro. Extracts also prevented carrageenan-induced paw edema in the animal models. These results prove that cow parsley has anti-inflammatory activity.
